What do you use Retinex for?

I’m trying to make a serious effort to use RT for a bit, as an educational (hopefully) change from darktable, and because I’d simply like to get a bit better at using it.

I was playing with this image I posted as a Play Raw recently.
I came across Retinex… and find it rather interesting. It seems to be in effect a kind of tonemapping/local contrast effect, with some history behind it, going by the RawPedia page on it.
Curious as to whether you find it something you use regularly, or just under specific circumstances?
Here’s my RT effort at this file, using Retinex in a fairly subtle way.

And, if you don’t mind me saying, that’s a really good usage example — it looks really nice!
