Can't open g'mic with gimp 3

Hello, i try to use gmic with gimp 3. Got error 0xc0000022 with gmic_gimp_qt.exe . Install with installer, then with .zip with always same error. The old versions (gimp 2 and gmic ) were working well.I am on Win11. Thanks for help and sorry for poor english

Hi @alain. I’m in charge of asking sillly questions today.

You are installing G’MIC-Qt plug-in for GIMP 3.0 and not the older gmic for GIMP 2.10?

Screen shot of the error message would be helpful. Thanks!

EDIT: Also, how/when does the error take place?

  • At start-up, when GIMP loads plug-ins?
  • Later on, when you first use a G’MIC filter?

Thanks again.

I use gmic for gimp3. Error takes place at start-up

@alain
Thank you for the additional details. I am away from a Windows11 machine, so I can’t test to reproduce. Perhaps this evening, (About 11 pm, UTC)

I am wondering if left-over files from your Gimp 2.10 G’MIC installation may be interfering with Gimp 3 /G’MIC 3.5.3. That is, the de-installation of the old files was possibly incomplete. See @David_Tschumperle post on the 3.5 change log: Post 66, Release of G’MIC 3.5. I haven’t tested this idea, it raises the possibility that old binary files are being used by the new installation.

This would not be the case for a completely new installation on a machine where there is no longer any trace of Gimp 2.10 and the G’MIC plug-in.

Still in the hunt…

It could be also a bug in the G’MIC-Qt binary for GIMP 3.
Does anyone else (I mean anyone else than me) already succeeded in installing and running the G’MIC-Qt plug-in for GIMP 3 ? It works for me, but I’m maybe the only one…

FWIW, See SallyAnne’s post at Gimpchat: Deleted Gimp 3 RC3 and (inadvertently) G’MIC-QT for Gimp3 as well. Downloaded the new, official GIMP 3 and G’MIC Qt for GIMP 3, installed both, and appears not to be having issues GimpChat ā€œGIMP 3 is releasedā€ Post 5

I have no problems with G’MIC 3.5.3 in Gimp-2.10.38 and Gimp-3.0.0 in Windows 10.

I also have no problems with G’MIC 3.5.3 in Gimp 2.10.38 and Gimp 3.0.0 in Windows 11.

I used the zip files

I had the same problem with G’MIC when I downloaded v3.5 it from Github. I then went to G’MIC website and on the page, further down, was the .exe link for GIMP 3.0. (there is a zip link, but I ignored that). On installing it, G’MIC works just fine.

This is on the Win 11 OS

Hi @alain

Had no luck reproducing your fault. I installed on a virtual machine running Windows 11 Professional that had prior GIMP 2.10 and G’MIC 3.5 installs. I did ā€œbasic uninstallsā€ followed by using Windows installers for GIMP and G’MIC. Apart from being a virtual, I don’t think this setting is far different from your own.

By ā€œbasic uninstallā€ I mean:

  1. Start button ⇒ ā€œSettingsā€.
  2. Navigate to Apps: ā€œAppsā€ ⇒ ā€œInstalled appsā€.
  3. Find G’MIC in the list.
  4. Uninstall: Select ā€œMoreā€ and then ā€œUninstallā€.

Repeated for GIMP 2.10.

I followed this basic uninstall knowing that it leaves certain plug-in, profile and configuration files behind; I wished to see if such would interfere with follow-on installs in a manner that you reported.

Then I installed GIMP 3.0 This is 3.0.0 as of 2025-03-17. Following installation, a log-out and a logging back in, It started up normally without the G’MIC plug-in.

Then I installed G’MIC-Qt plug-in for GIMP 3.0, using the Installer .exe

Logged out; logged back in again. Then started GIMP. It started normally and the G’MIC plug-in was available.

So — I don’t have a known-to-work fix for you. I suggest uninstalling G’MIC completely, a three-step process. (1) Remove G’MIC through the Start menu, see above, then (2) Find the directory where GIMP plug-ins are installed (something like C:\Users\"yourname"\AppData\Roaming\GIMP\3.0\plug-ins) and (3) remove the gimp_gmic_qt sub-folder in that directory, if it exists.

Start GIMP, ensures that it runs and that G’MIC is no longer in the Filters menu.

Do a fresh install of G’MIC.

If you acquired GIMP 3.0 before 3/17, you might also consider a complete uninstall and re-install of GIMP as well; certain bugs have been cleared up with this 3/17 release.

Sorry I couldn’t be more informative. Hope this helps.

Thank’s a lot for help. I used the last restore point, erased gimp 2.10 and g’mic, uses regedit to erase all what was gmic and gimp, re install gimp 3 and g’mic and all is working now. I have also previously played with the stand-alone g’mic and compared the files used.It seems that i miss some dlls so the decision to restart a clean win 11.Thank you for help and time you dedicate to me, i really appreciate

Hello all; new to the discussion here.
I’m not new to Gimp or G’mic; I’ve used both for years. I recently upgraded to Gimp 3.0.2-1 and download G’mic but can’t seem to get it to install. It placed itself into the roaming / Gimp / 3.0 folder, but it doesn’t appear on the plugins list in Gimp. There’s also a second ā€œgmicā€ folder under the Gimp one, which contains six .gmz files. I moved it to the Gimp folder, then by turns into the plug-ins folder and finally into the gmic_gimp_qt but to no avail (and yes, I turned off Gimp and restarted it after each move to verify it didn’t work).
Help? I use G’mic far too much to wanna live without it!
ETA: I’m using Windows 10.

Since my last post, I have uninstalled and re-installed both Gimp and G’mic and reinstalled Gimp. I tried to reinstall G’mic both using the installer.exe and by copying the contents of the zip file directly into the plugins folder in AppData…no luck… Any suggestions for what else to try?

@DragonLady, welcome to the board.

  1. You might benefit from reviewing Unable to integrate G’MIC into GIMP, It is Gimp 2.x -centric, but covers some of the basic troubleshooting steps.
  2. GIMP and G’MIC need to agree on plugin location. Start your 3.0.2-1 Gimp, and load an image. Is GMIC-Qt listed in the Gimp Filters menu listing?
  3. If not, check where Gimp looks for plug-ins. Open Edit ⇒ Preferences; the Preferences dialog box has a left hand preference item tree.
  4. Scroll down to the ā€œFoldersā€ item, and, if that item is preceded by a ā€œ+ā€ sign, click on that sign so that it changes to a ā€œā€“ā€ and provides an additional list of folders. Locate the Plug-ins choice and click on it
  5. The Preference dialog box should change and look (something) like this.

Your entries will be quite different.
  6. These are the paths to the folders in which Gimp checks for plug-ins, the latest gimp_gmic_qt.exe binary executable should be in one of these folders.
  7. Normally the G’MIC Windows installer finds the correct plug-in folder, but if you have recently upgraded from 2.10 using a Windows uninstall/Windows installer cycle, some mismatch is possible; Windows uninstall preserves folders that users may have changed and in some circumstances this may cause gimp_gmic_qt binary executable to go into a folder that Gimp 3.0.2 has not been set up to use.

You may also follow the ā€˜nuclear’ option that @alain took - do a deep uninstall of both GIMP and G’MIC. By ā€˜deep uninstall’ I mean running the Windows uninstaller on both GIMP and G’MIC and manually removing folders and files that the uninstallers preserve.

Hope this helps.

Hello, grosgood!
Thank-you for your post. I did add the correct folder to the plug-ins list, but it still didn’t work -that is, G’mic did not appear on the filters list when I opened an image.
However, I decided to experiment by making another, separate ā€œpluginsā€ folder in a third location outside of both AppData and program files, and copied the G’mic files from the zip into it. Once I added the third folder to the list in Gimp’s preferences it appeared on the list when I restarted. I haven’t had a chance to use it yet but I don’t anticipate any problems.
So…we know the files in the .zip are all there; so it might only require some tweaking for individual systems to work.
I’ll edit this later (or add another post) when I’ve tried it out to let you know if all is working or not…but as I said, I don’t anticipate any more troubles.

I haven’t tried all the functions, but G’mic does seem to be working for me.

I am having trouble getting gmic 3.5.3 to work with gimp 3.02. This is a fresh install for both on a new surface running Windows 11. I install gimp and then gmic and then gmic. When I start gimp I get the error message that the application was unable to start correctly (0xc000007b). I have tried just about everything. I have uninstalled, and reinstalled both. And I have checked that gimp is pointing to the correct plug-in folders. I have tried installing it in both in Users/[me]/AppData/roaming/GIMP/3.0/plug-ins and Program Files/GIMP 3/lib/gimp/3.0/plug-ins with the same effect.
If I go to the directory where gmic is installed and try to run it, it says that it cannot run because it is missing several dlls, which are all in the GIMP/bin directory. But, i I put them in, I get the same error as above. Any ideas?
