Favorite foto of 2025

Actually, did not take too many photos this year - but this one is probably my favorite (especially, as the diving trip was also fun!)

@kap55 I know you live near me, so I have to ask: is that a local shot or were you on a trip somewhere?

Great photo by the way!

Thanks - that’s on the Atnarko River (Bella Coola) in September.

My favorite of the year. A pygmy blue butterfly, the smallest butterfly in the world.

I’m always more than a year behind in my post-processing these days, but here are a couple that are currently high on my list of favourites for 2025.

I’m usually impatiently waiting for people to get out of the way so I can photograph some bit of architecture or nice juxtaposition of shapes. But here I think the people are the anchor that help your eyes to explore the image.

In this one I was trying to get pictures of people’s legs and their shadows against the pattern of the paving (I do have some other nice shots that achieve what I was after), but then a random girl ran into the shot chasing a pigeon and I snapped just at the right time…

Did she catch it???

I do not have a favorite photo of the year because my goals have changed over the year:
a rediscovered interest in landscapes, minimalism, visual-flow and then a very interesting workshop. Too many layers of interest fighting for attention.
But I have an image that I looked at the most:

It hangs in my office at work printed in a decent size so I cannot look away. This is nice because I keep discovering more and more details.

It’s hard to pick just one. It was a good year for landscape astro even I didn’t get out as much as I wanted. I’ve printed all of these (acrylic and fine art), but I haven’t decided where to hang them yet.

Autumn colors trip. This is McClure Pass area in Colorado. I loved how the clouds created shadows and patches of gold colored aspen trees.

The Milky Way over the Needles Mountains with the San Juan Mountains in Colorado.

Don’t jump in the water… I’m surprised it wasn’t frozen. It’s always colder in this valley then the weather predicts and I ignore that sage wisdom I’ve learned. My hands and feet were cold after a short while.

The Aurora from November. This lake was so low I hiked pass 2 buoys.

Out in the San Juan area while hunting for Autumnscapes, I met up with my astro buddy and captured the Orion and the Winter Milky Way.

Hello,
I have selected these two photos, which I am currently using as wallpapers on my two PCs, as they resonate so deeply with me.

I am always fascinated by the encounters and exchanges we, as photographers, can have with insects; these moments create a true form of non-verbal communication. The insect eventually ‘accepts’ us into its immediate environment, shifting from fear to a form of curiosity or calm vigilance.

In the reflection of the glass, a connection is established between two scales of life. Under the insect’s eye, the photographer in turn becomes the subject of a strange fascination.

Happy holidays to all,
Christian

I’m very proud I took these photos this year. I really feel my photo skills have improved!

You’ve described what I love about insect photography perfectly. I will sometimes spend 30 min just sitting there watching insects, not photographing anything, until I get a sense that the stress of seeing a giant has subsided.

I’m jealous of the mantis. I found a mantis in a friend’s asparagus bush that I was watching for a few weeks, but couldn’t get a photo of it where it wasn’t hiding somewhat inside the bush with a messy background.

Thank you, I was very lucky, it’s my first praying mantis. I was on my terrace when I saw it land on a lavender plant. I had time to grab my camera to take a picture and then it flew away.

So much this year, it took time to narrow it down and the year isn’t finished yet!

My favorite photo this year is this one because it looks a bit like a painting, but especially because of the wonderful memories of the French Pyrenees, where it was taken. It was also much warmer than it is now :grinning:

Not sure if it’s my best one of the year, but i think this one is up there.

Awesome. A wonderful perspective and a really nice - and somehow touching capture. Well done & thanks for sharing :sunglasses:

My biggest achievement this year was to finish my first proper photography art project, already posted in Flowers in Monochrome - finished calendar. Apart from those, my favourite photo of the year is this one, an attempt to imitate the style of Yasuhiro Ogawa:

I got back into photography this year, and I shot a ton. How do I distill a favorite out of that?

Then I thought… This one.

In the grand scheme of things it’s nothing too special[1], but for me it was a really big confirmation that spending a load of money and getting back into the game was a good decision.

  1. …although I’m not above being proud of shooting that out of hand while still getting the hang of the camera… ↩︎
