New here and new to darktable.

First-time poster here—hopefully, I’ve included everything correctly! I’m currently processing some summer shots in darktable 5.4 using AgX. I’ve gone for a minimal edit and a fairly tight crop (retaining about 60-70% of the original). I’m curious to see different perspectives—how would you guys process this image?

welcome to the forum, this is a lovely shot!

Thank you.

Very nice photo! I have no idea how to improve the image. I could make changes, certainly, but not necessarily for the better.

Did you use a high shutter speed or a flash?

BTW the flowers look like what I see here in the summer; penstemons I think. But I’m not very good recognizing plants.

Welcome to pixls!

Yes the shutter speed for this one was 1/5000 of a sec. Was a very bright day. The flower is called cardinal flower -a native wild flower found in Eastern US -a humming bird magnet.

Really pretty picture thanks for posting!

I ended up editing it in 3 different ways

#1 More stylized dreamy

#2 High contrast in the details and tried separating the bird from the background

IMG_8843_02.CR3.xmp (34.3 KB)

#3 More of a “standard” edit with unmodified colors and subtle contrast

A quick edit doing mostly what I usually do with my images but I did use a did use a few extra tools.

  • Bumped up the exposure a little bit
  • Used tone equalizer to bring down the brightest parts of the flower
  • Used color equalizer to very slightly reduce the saturation in the flower
  • Retouch to get rid of the flower in the lower left

Tried with the RL_export…adds some grain and saturation it seems

Welcome to the forum. Lovely capture. I used parametric masks to restrict sharpening and denoising to minimise the noise in the blurred background.

I did one with filmicRGB, another with AgX. I tried to keep other changes the same.

I went back to my filmicRGB edit (above) and added contrast. It became much more like the AgX edit. I won’t re-post it, though.

Hi @rmishra and welcome! This is a gorgeous opening shot

This is a close crop with AgX and I masked the bird for a little extra saturation lift. Also used tone equaliser to darken the background a smidge.

One thing I struggle with on images such as these is how to maintain vibrancy on things like this cardinal flower, without clipping the colour channel. (I let it blow the reds here, but I think you can tell).

Beautiful edit @Popanz

This was a nice one to kick off the new year. I hope to be a bit more active on pixls.us in the coming year, so here is mine:

With a rather gloomy winter’s day outside and snow covering the ground, I wanted to give a feeling of a hot and sunny day.
